The central task of the Swedish Secretariat for Gender Research is to strengthen the impact of research and knowledge related to gender and gender equality in academia and the rest of society. In addition, the Secretariat is in charge of several large projects, briefly described below.

The Secretariat shall, in close dialogue with the research community, serve as a platform for interaction within the broad field of Swedish gender research, as well as promote dissemination of research findings to the public in a non-academic format. Through analysis and research-based knowledge production, the Secretariat shall strengthen and develop the prospects for effective gender research. The Secretariat shall carry out activities and undertake assignments and collaboration projects that aim to strengthen the research domain. Internationalisation and the position of Swedish gender research internationally, in terms of cooperation, networks, scholarly publications and research grants, shall be considered a prioritised area.
The Secretariat shall promote and make available both empirically based and critically problematising research and other knowledge that may contribute to gender equality work that is firmly grounded in knowledge. By actively planning and undertaking analytical and development-oriented assignments as well as gender equality projects of more concrete nature, such as process support and commissioned training, the Secretariat shall contribute to the development of gender equality as a practical, political and epistemological field within academia and society at large. Nordic and European cooperation enriches the national assignment.
The Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Research (GIG) is a resource for researchers at the University of Gothenburg aimed to promote high-quality gender research and other research with a gender respective. In October 2011, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Gothenburg decided that GIG should be positioned at the Swedish Secretariat for Gender Research.
The Swedish Secretariat for Gender Research has been commissioned by the Swedish government to support all state-funded higher education institutions as well as Chalmers University of Technology and Jönköping University in their gender mainstreaming efforts 2016–2019.
The Swedish government has commissioned the Swedish Secretariat for Gender Research to support the efforts of a large number of government agencies selected to integrate a gender perspective in all of their operations.
In the autumn of 2015, the University of Gothenburg launched a 4-year programme to gender mainstream its operations. The Swedish Secretariat for Gender Research will provide support during the initial stages of the programme.
Includegender.org is a national resource for gender equality with information and news about gender equality as well as practical examples and concrete tools useful in the gender equality work. The portal is operated by the Swedish Secretariat for Gender Research, the Swedish county administrative boards, the Swedish ESF Council, the Swedish innovation office Vinnova and the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions.
In 2013, the Nordic Council of Ministers decided to place Nordic Information on Gender (NIKK) at the Swedish Secretariat for Gender Research as a cooperative body.
The Swedish Secretariat for Gender Research is a member of an advocacy platform aimed to boost the impact of Science with and for Society, or SwafS. SwafS is a Horizon 2020 sub-programme that promotes and funds effective cooperation between research/innovation and other sectors of society, with a particular focus on the areas of gender equality, public engagement, ethics, science education, open access/open science and RRI governance. The platform gathers about 40 actors with expertise in all SwafS domains.
The project Management and Governance encompasses a study of the influence of organisational and political conditions and obstacles, with a focus on management culture, on leadership at different levels in municipal risk and security work – from a gender perspective.
